Artist TimelapseDurational live performanceArtist Timelapse is a durational live performance in which Iranian artist Sharzadian relocates her studio practice into the public space of an event. Encased within a self-defined bubble, the artist spends the duration of the performance painting, reading and writing poetry, moving, resting, and speaking to herself — inhabiting the rhythms of creation as they unfold in real time. The work functions as a living timelapse: a slow, continuous accumulation of gestures, thoughts, and materials that reveal the often unseen temporal and emotional labor of artistic practice. What is usually private becomes visible, while remaining protected by clearly defined boundaries.Sharzadian’s broader practice combines mirror, painting, and sculptural forms to explore reflection, fragmentation, and presence. In Artist Timelapse, the body becomes the primary medium — a reflective surface through which internal dialogue, language, and movement materialize over time.Audience interaction is intentionally limited and occurs only at specific moments, determined by the artist’s physical position within the space. When seated in designated positions, visitors may request a poem to be written for them, or a poem to be read and interpreted. Outside of these moments, the performance remains observational. As an offering, Artist Timelapse operates as a site-responsive live artwork that unfolds throughout an event, providing a sustained artistic presence rather than a scheduled spectacle. It creates an atmosphere of attentiveness and slowness, inviting audiences to witness creation without interruption. The performance is adaptable in duration and spatial configuration, and is suitable for cultural events, exhibitions, festivals, and curated brand or design contexts seeking a live artistic intervention that privileges process, intimacy, and time.Sharzadian is an Iranian artist based in Lisbon.

Artist Statement

My work examines how reflection structures perception. Using mirror, light, and geometry, I construct forms that question what is seen and what is assumed. Each surface functions as an active space — one that absorbs, fractures, and redefines its surroundings.Truth, in this context, is not singular. It emerges through the intersection of perspectives — a composite of many realities. The mirror becomes an instrument of that multiplicity, revealing that perception is always in flux.Drawing from the Persian tradition of mirror architecture, my work extends its original purpose: to dissolve the boundary between self and space. Reflection becomes a material of inquiry — a way to redirect attention from object to experience.Through painting and constructed form, I explore how light behaves when given structure, and how the viewer’s movement completes the work. The result is not an image, but a shifting encounter — a moment where form and perception briefly align.

Mirrorwork Workshop — Lisbon StudioA Workshop on Persian mirror art by Sharzadian

About Aine-Kari an ancient persian art

In Persian architecture, āine-kāri (mirror work) converted palaces into poetry through millions of geometric fragments of reflection.

From the Venetian monopoly to the war and peace rooms of the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, from royal salons to whispered treaties that ended empires—mirrors have seen it all.Sharzadian is a Persian artist whose narrative-driven practice is shaped by her lived experience across California, Paris, Lisbon, and Tehran. Working primarily with reflective surfaces, she constructs poetic dialogues between shadow, form, and reflection—each offering a distinct yet interwoven fragment of truth. Her sculptural work draws on Ainekari, the intricate mirrorwork tradition found in ancient Persian architecture, reinterpreting it through a contemporary lens. By layering light, absence, and perspective, Sharzadian invites viewers into a space where reality is never singular, but refracted—seen differently depending on where one stands.

Artist Statement
“Shadow is reflection.”
In Shadow is Reflection, Sharzadian orchestrates a compelling visual meditation on the layered nature of reality. Through sculptural compositions of mirror mosaics—rooted in the traditional craft of Iranian ayeneh-kari yet reimagined within a contemporary aesthetic—she invites us into a conversation between light and its absence, between what is seen and what is sensed.Suspended on sheets of transparent acrylic, each form is incomplete in isolation. It is only when illuminated that the work activates its full presence: casting a shadow, reflecting its surroundings, and fragmenting reality into kaleidoscopic refractions. What emerges is a choreography of perception—three iterations of the same truth rendered simultaneously in form, reflection, and shadow. The mirror, often perceived as a symbol of clarity, here becomes a site of distortion. It reflects not the object itself, but what stands before it—shifting, multiplying, abstracting. The shadow, conversely, offers coherence through silhouette: a unified shape defined by absence. And the sculptural form, hovering in between, acts as the axis through which both forces unfold.Sharzadian’s work resists binary thinking. Light and shadow are not opposites; reflection is not merely imitation. In this series, truth is plural. Each facet—mirror, void, contour—holds its own validity. They do not contradict one another, but rather co-exist, layered and interdependent.Shadow is Reflection is not just an aesthetic gesture—it is a philosophical one. It reclaims fragmentation as honesty, distortion as clarity, and absence as presence. In a world increasingly shaped by singular narratives, Sharzadian offers a quiet but radical invitation:
to see from multiple angles, to hold paradox, and to understand that reality is a mosaic—always shifting, always true.
